CHARLES TOWN – Next week’s annual Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce awards dinner is set to focus attention on the president of United, the growing bank headquartered in Charleston, as well as the parent company behind the city’s newest hotel and other retail expansions.
Heather Morgan McIntyre, the chamber’s executive director, said the annual banquet set for June 27 will feature as keynote speaker Richard M. “Rick” Adams Jr., the president of United Bank, which earlier this year added a number of locations in the Panhandle thanks to its merger with Centra Bank.
McIntyre announced that Uniwest – a commercial/retail construction company based in Falls Church, Va. – will be honored with the George E. Vickers Major Industry Award during the chamber’s 53rd annual awards dinner.
Chamber members as well as interested members of the public may attend the dinner, which will be in the casino’s third-floor Skyline Terrace at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Tickets cost $28 and may be purchased by calling the chamber at 304-725-2055 or by stopping by the chamber office in Suite 200 inside the BB&T Building at 29 Keyes Ferry Road in Charles Town.
The evening, which begins with a cash bar at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner at 7 p.m., also will include the announcement of this year’s Distinguished Citizen of Jefferson County Award, an honor co-sponsored by the Spirit of Jefferson.
The chamber’s 2012-13 officers and directors also will be recognized at the banquet.
McIntyre said Uniwest has been a growing presence in Jefferson County since the mid-1980s. With four divisions – construction, development, commercial realty and hospitality – the company’s focus includes Baltimore, Philadelphia, D.C., Richmond, Va., and the Panhandle.
In Jefferson County, Uniwest owns and manages the Jefferson Crossing Shopping Center, which includes Martin’s supermarket, CVS, IHOP, Applebee’s and Auto Zone. Uniwest’s most recent projects include Charles Town Auto Wash and the Hampton Inn and Suites, which opened in January.
Adams, who holds degrees from Pepperdine University, Rollins College and Washington & Lee University School of Law, has served as president of United Bank Inc. since 2007. Since 2000, he has been executive vice president of United Bankshares Inc., the $8.6 billion, multi-state bank holding company with 128 locations in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and D.C.
A past chairman of the West Virginia Bankers Association, he previously practiced law with the firm of Bowles, Rice, McDavid, Graff and Love.
He also serves as a board member of Energy Services of America Corp. and the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics’ advisory board. As an adjunct professor at WVU-Parkersburg, Adams teaches business law.
