[cleeng_content id="t1" price="0.15" description="Read it now!"]Summer Jam Reunion 2012 will kickoff at 2 p.m. with Dirty Deal, Blackmail and Kix. Gates open at 10 a.m. “It’s only fair to bring these bands back first since they were local favorites,” said Greg Shiley, owner of Shiley Acres.
The venue first opened in 1976 and closed the gates for the last time on July 21, 1993.
“We closed because at that time, MTV had ruined live entertainment,” Shiley said. “People stopped supporting local acts and local musicians. Clubs stopped hiring bands.”
Shiley is the owner of Shiley Construction Co. and Greg Shiley Farms. He began promoting concerts in 1976, after talking with friends at Club Lakewood in 1975. He held the first concert with his friend Jim Boyd, who went on to promote the J. Geils Band.
He decided last year to bring the concert series back.
“People have to drive 80 to 100 miles to see a show. There is nothing for the kids to do,” Shiley said.
Shiley has plans on bringing in a variety of musical genres. He is still finalizing the summer schedule.
“We have Charlie Daniels confirmed for Oct. 6,” Shiley said. “The July and August shows will be announced soon.”
Shiley said he started feeling nostalgic about five years ago and began thinking about bringing the concert series back. After a Facebook tribute page quickly garnered over 2,000 members, the decision was made to reopen.
“We are turning a new page. The first show will be a ‘go back and visit the day’ show. After that, we are going to move forward with new artists,” Shiley said. “We are turning a new page, but we do not want to forget where we came from. We will still visit the ‘good ole days’ every year.”
Shiley Acres used to be known for one rule: no glass. This time around, no coolers will be permitted. Food and beer will be available for purchase.
Although coolers are no longer allowed, patrons will be able to bring blankets and lawn chairs. All will need to bring identification and anyone under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent.
“We are here to have a good time. Our reputation was good back in the day,” Shiley said. “Come and enjoy yourself. Please remember to respect the community, our state, our neighbors and our law enforcement.”
“We are looking forward to a great show. We just need a pretty day.”
