Jefferson began defense of its Sectional softball title when it eliminated Hampshire, 5-0, in a second-round game played on the Lady Cougars’ home field.
The top-seeded Lady Cougars had a first-round bye and saw Washington defeat Hampshire, 8-2, on April 30 at Washington. The Trojans were on the brink of elimination when they came to Shenandoah Junction last Tuesday evening.
Jefferson ushered the Trojans out of the tournament with an 0-2 postseason record when the Lady Cougars posted a 5-0 win over them under the lights over a week ago.
Jefferson and Washington began a best-of-three series last Wednesday at Jefferson.
In eliminating Hampshire, Jefferson broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth. Kari Nuse’s triple plated Casey Lyons with the game’s first run. Chelsea Shepherd scored Nuse with her RBI single. When Shannon Lyons also singled and Shepherd rode home, the Lady Cougars assumed a 3-0 lead after five innings.
The next inning saw Jefferson take advantage of Hampshire’s fielding mistakes to score two more times. Nuse’s single drove in Emma Barr with one of the runs.
Alexandra Witt pitched the complete-game shutout for the Lady Cougars. She yielded only two hits and had Hampshire off balance all evening.
