CHARLESTON— Two low-run pitching performances from Paul Hvozdovic and Andrew Gallant helped Shepherd sweep a WVIAC doubleheader from homestanding Charleston by scores of 2-1 and 8-1.
The wins showed the Rams with nine victories in the last 11 games.
In winning the opener, 2-1, Shepherd left-hander Hvozdovic improved his record to 7-2 with a complete-game four-hitter. He fanned four and did not walk any. Hvozdovic outdueled Charleston’s Alec Austin, who had a three-hitter for his six innings. Austin was 0-4 with the loss.
Shepherd’s runs came in the second when Nathan Minnich was hit by a pitch, Chad Murphy doubled, Ryan Messina walked, and Nash Hutter had a two-run single.
Shepherd had only three hits.
In the nightcap, Gallant went the first five innings to improve his record to 2-2. Justin Byrd went the last two innings. He yielded three hits, no walks and fanned three in two scoreless innings.
The Rams had 10 hits, including a 3-for-5 game from Aaron Scoville, who scolred twice. Jake Cook was 2-or-2, Murphy was 2-for-4, and Travis Sluger had two RBIs. Hutter was on base three times and scored two runs.
