CHARLESTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller is urging President Barack Obama to expedite the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
The West Virginia Democrat wrote to Obama on Monday. The letter said that while the United States should continue pursuing a counterterrorism strategy, the expense of U.S. efforts in Afghanistan “is neither sustainable, nor advisable.” Rockefeller says it’s especially true considering that budgets for critical programs at home are being cut to address the deficit.
The senator also cited a recent spate of violence in Afghanistan and anti-American protests.
Rockefeller says no amount of funding, time or heroism can address Afghanistan’s challenges, which he says belong to the Afghan people.
Rockefeller says the original U.S. goals in Afghanistan have been achieved, and “it is now time for our troops to come home.”
