SHEPHERDSTOWN – As Shepherd University hosted its 10th annual Relay for Life on March 30, the school took another step toward its fundraising goal.
Holly Frye, assistant vice president for student affairs at the school, said that Shepherd has raised $74,000 of its $80,000 goal. The school’s deadline to raise the funds is Aug. 1.
During the event, the university’s president Suzanne Shipley accepted the South Atlantic Region 2011 Relay for Life Collegiate President of the Year Award.
The American Cancer Society also recognized Frye for her 10 years of leadership in organizing the school’s Relay for Life.
This year’s event attracted 958 participants and 69 teams. Top fundraising teams were Hope Riders with $8,778; the school’s women’s soccer team with $3,993; and Sigma Alpha Iota Winchester alumnae with $3,727.
Top individual participants included Anne Miller, who raised $2,313; Nancy Strite, who raised $2,242; and Carol Boyd, who raised $1,160.
Among the sponsors for the event were Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Fargo Insurance Group, Pepsi, Prettyman Broadcasting, Shepherd University Dining Services, Shepherd University Wellness Center and River and Trail Outfitters.
