It was Jefferson coming away with a cold but solid softball win over homestanding Washington last Thursday on the Patriots’ home field.
In notching a 6-2 win in the game that put the Lady Cougars in early control of the Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 regular season standings, Jefferson has the seeding lead in the Section that also has Washington and Hampshire as the other schools.
Jefferson pitcher Alexandra Witt finished with a complete-game five-hitter in notching the win. Witt fanned seven.
The Lady Cougars were credited with 13 hits in the win that shoved their overall record to 10-3. Witt had three RBIs and two hits. Shelby McTighe drove in two runs and had two hits.
Amber Curry had a Washington RBI.
After two scoreless innings, Jefferson loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third. The Patriots were able to keep the game scoreless by getting out of that jam without Jefferson scoring.
It was Washington that actually scored the game’s first run when Curry’s sacrifice fly plated Washington’s starting pitcher, Chelsea Carey.
In the top of the fifth, Jefferson took a lead it would not cede. Witt’s double plated two runs. And then Brittney Jackson scored Witt with her double to give the Lady Cougars a 3-1 lead.
Jefferson’s lead was at 5-1 when McTighe’s triple scored two more runs. Witt scored McTighe to up Jefferson’s lead to 6-1.
A Washington seventh-inning move produced a run when Kaitlyn Woodward drove in a run.
The Lady Cougars had a 10-3 overall record and was ahead of its competition in the Class AAA Sectional. Washington was even at 6-6 overall.
