Grantham, Collier land spots on Class AAA all-state teams

CHARLESTON— Jefferson High senior Garrett Grantham was named to the eight-player, Class AAA all-state first team and Washington senior Tyrek Collier was selected to the eight-player, all-state second team.

The 5-foot-11 Grantham was a four-year starter for the Cougars while playing for his grandfather, Bob Starkey. In the 2011-12 season, Grantham averaged 21 points, nearly five rebounds, and five assists per game. He was Jefferson’s second-leading rebounder. Grantham averaged 17 points a game during the previous season.

The 6-foot-2 Collier was also a four-year starter while playing for Coach Don Bullett at Washington High. In the 2011-12 season, Collier averaged 13.4 points a game, and 8.4 rebounds an outing as Washington had a 15-6 regular season record that included a regular season win over eventual state champion, Hedgesville.

Collier averaged about 15 points a game as a junior.

Joining Grantham on the all-state first-team were Dante Grantham (Martinsburg), Devin Hoehn (Parkersburg), Nathan Adrian (Morgantown), Luke Eddy (George Washington), Q. J. Peterson (Hedgesville), Stevie Browning (Logan), and Boo Lathon (Wheeling Park).

The other seven players on the second team were Angelo Serianni (Nitro), Errin Baynes (Wheeling Park), Ot Elmore (South Charleston), Travon Horton (Fairmont Senior), Cameron Shannon (Woodrow Wilson), Wes Mitchem (Parkersburg South), and Toquan Hayes (Huntington).

The eight Class A boys basketball chosen to the all-state first-team are Daniel Collie (Parkersburg Catholic), Casey Kessler (Midland Trail), Jordan Burdette (Midland Trail), Josh Pierson (St. Joseph), Cody Triplett (Trinity), Derek Renner (St. Marys), Clay Rokisky (Weirton Madonna), and Jordan Simpson (Man).

The eight Class AA boys basketball players chosen to the all-state first team are Brett Morris (Webster County), Mikey Newsome (Tug Valley), Anthony Eades (Bluefield), Marcus Schofield (Wyoming East), Mark Winters (Magnolia), Mason Pack (Tug Valley), Jacob Copley (Tolsia), and Chase Connor (Shady Spring).
