Thomas, Haglund lead wins

Washington continued on an upward curve when its boy’s tennis team defeated visiting Musselman, 7-0, last Tuesday on the Patriot courts.

From No. 1 to No. 4 singles, Will Wheatley, Patrik Haglund, Austin Thomas, and Alden Roth all defeated their Musselman counterparts.

The Washington doubles team consisting of Wheatley/Haglund, Thomas/Roth, and Cullen Irving/Cory Coomler all posted wins in their respective matches.

The next day, the Patriots defeated visiting Sherando, 4-3.

Sherando won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches with Scott and Mikus, but then Washington had an 8-0 win at No. 3 singles from Thomas and another 8-0 win at No. 4 singles from Roth.

With the match even at 2-2 following the singles matches, Washington won at No. 2 (Thomas/Roth) by an 8-1 count and at No. 3 (Irving/Coomler) by a tight 9-7 score. Sherando’s Scott/Mikus defeated Wheatley/Haglund, 9-7, at No. 1.

Posting wins in No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, Washington defeated Martinsburg, 6-1, on March 22. The Patriot singles winners were Haglund, Thomas, and Roth. Martinsburg’s No. 1 player, Grant Davis, was the lone Bulldog winner.

In doubles, Will Wheatley/Haglund, Roth/Thomas, and Irving/Coomler all had Washington victories.
