Seven Horses, Jockeys Involved in Spill

(Charles Town, WV) – Horse Sharp Beauty broke down on the far turn in Wednesday’s 8th race at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, triggering a 7 horse spill that left Miss Fifty as the lone finisher in the 8 horse allowance race.

According to Charles Town Chief Steward Danny Wright, only one of the seven jockeys – Anthony Mawing – was kept overnight in the hospital for observation, but all others walked out.

“Everybody seems to be ok,” said Wright who was at the hospital after the accident.  “Mr. Mawing remains in the hospital for observation and is reportedly in stable condition.”

Wright indicated that the other six riders thrown from their mounts, Grant Whitacre, Mitchell Snow, Jose Montano, Katie Reynolds, Clifford Dooley and Carlos Marrero, who was aboard Sharp Beauty, were able to walk away at some point last night following the spill.

Marrero’s mount, Sharp Beauty, was the only horse euthanized.

“Let me make it clear,” Wright added.  “This was not an issue of the track condition causing an accident.  This was a horse breaking down during the race that unfortunately took the field with them.”

One Response to Seven Horses, Jockeys Involved in Spill

  1. The track was in horrible condition. If it wasn’t the track, why not run the last race on the card? Blaming the horse is unfortunate, because they’re not telling the truth. I’m boycotting Charles Town forever.
