CHARLESTON (AP) — West Virginia residents having trouble with the documents now required for driver’s license renewal may soon receive some help from a new brochure from the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
The DMV in January started complying with new federal requirements for proving identity and state residency when applying for a driver’s license or applying to renew one. Residents are now required to show a birth certificate, Social Security card, and two proofs of West Virginia residency.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that officials say the federal guidelines are stringent and do not allow the states any leeway when applying them. States that do not follow the Real ID act regulations could find themselves facing a loss of federal funding.
