Baseball’s Rudolph remembered

Former Jefferson County resident Ernie Rudolph has passed away at age 73 at Winchester Medical Center in Virginia.

A 1956 graduate of Charles Town High School, Ernie was a multi-sport athlete with the Panthers. He played during the era when Charles Town teams were coached by Dick Harmison and Harold “Zip” Lorenz.

Ernie was born in Leetown in 1938, but lived for many years in Summit Point with his sports-playing and sports-coaching sons Mark, Ernie and John.

He is credited with being the driving force behind the Summit Point Baseball Youth League, which began in the southern part of the county at the South Jefferson Park and has evolved through the years into the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth League that offers both baseball and softball to children of various ages.

When health problems forced Ernie to make numerous trips to Winchester to see his doctors, he eventually had to move to that city because it was closer to medical facilities.
