KEYSER— With six weight bracket champions, Washington High brought home the Potomac Valley Conference wrestling championship on Saturday.
The six champions were the major contributors to the 190 points Washington had. Runner-up Hedgesville had 152 points with Martinsburg (140 points), Jefferson (136 points), Keyser (133 points), Berkeley Springs (125 points), Musselman (123 points), Frankfort (69 points), Petersburg (35 points), and Moorefield (9 points) trailing in behind the meet-winning Patriots.
Washington had Micah Skubon going over the 100-win mark in his career when he won the 195-pound bracket. The Patriots’ Ty Reynolds had an 11-2 major decision win in the championship round at 106. At 113, Washington’s Tyler Cross registered a pin in 3:23 in the title match.
Washington’s Austin Reynolds registered a 6-0 win in the championship match at 120 pounds. After Washington’s Jonathan Wimer fell short at 126 (losing an 11-0 major decision in the title match), Gunnar Wilt came on at 132 to post a 15-1 major decision victory in the bracket’s championship round.
At 145, Washington’s Dylan Ceravalo took a 7-2 decision over Hedgesville’s lone bracket finalist, Mike Ciccihino. Skubon was able to get the fastest pin fall in any bracket finals match when he won over Berkeley Springs’ Kyle Shambaugh in 1:47.
Another runner-up spot for the Patriots came at 220 where Ashby Heath was decisioned, 8-2, by Berkeley Springs’ Matt Parkinson in the last match in the championship bracket.
Steve Edwards was fourth at 138 when he was pinned in 4:26 in the third-place match by Jefferson’s John Bryant. Bryant’s finish was good for a third-place finish for the Cougars.
Jefferson’s highest finish was the second-place it had from Keynan Williams at 182. Williams was stopped in the championship round, 14-1, in a major-decision win by Berkeley Springs’ Tory Bennett.
Chris Yenchko was third for Jefferson at 145 when he stopped Frankfort’s Nathan Lewis by pin fall in 2:59 in the third-place match. Another Cougar, Shane Moore, won a 9-6 decision over Hedgesville’s Nick Clevenger in the third-place match at 160.
Cody Butts gave the Cougars a third at 126 when he defeated Frankfort’s Derek George by a 14-0 major decision in the third-place match.
Jefferson’s Lane Harder was fourth at 220 when he stopped, 4-0, by Petersburg’s John Paul Nichols in the third-place match.
Washington’s Codie Gustines was selected as the PVC Coach of the Year after the Patriots won the 2012 conference championship.
