W.Va. autism advocates to visit Legislature
CHARLESTON (AP) — Family members and advocates of West Virginia children with autism plan to gather at the Legislature to press lawmakers to back a proposed fix for the state’s autism-coverage law.
They say they plan to meet Monday afternoon in the West Wing Reception Room in hopes of sending a message to lawmakers to support legislation that would clarify and bolster a law passed last year.
The law aims to require public and private insurance to cover treatment for autism-related disorders, and set maximum benefits based on a child’s age. But a disagreement arose over the interpretation of what those limits covered. Autism advocates say the caps are specific to applied behavioral therapy, while insurers interpret it to mean all treatment for the disorder.
