Summit Point CEOS share Jan. meeting highlights

“Artisan Crafts of the World” was the program topic at the January meeting of the Summit Point CEOS Club that met at the home of Callie Hale. Program leader Wallis Anne Magaha stated that individuals have used their hands to make artisan crafts throughout history. These skills have passed down through the generations and are part of the cultures of many nations. Artisan crafts have a great impact on the economies of these countries. Many of these items are produced by craftspeople in their homes and villages and generate much-needed income for families. Nearly a third of these small businesses in developing areas are owned by women and in many cases is the main source of income for their families. Today, these artisan crafters are able to sell their products directly to customers through the internet and catalogs, retaining more profit for themselves.

During a DVD presentation, artisan crafts such as Irish lace and recycled paper jewelry from Uganda were shown being made. Also, club members brought different artisan craft items from other countries for a show and tell. They included the paper jewelry from Uganda and other jewelry, items from Russia and Africa, and a vase from Iraq.

During the business meeting, Magaha reported that the items donated by the members in December for the patients at the VA Center have been delivered.

The members discussed attending an upcoming play at the Old Opera House.

New yearbooks and health motivator calendars were given to all members. Robyn Lance, the health motivator for the club, stated that fall prevention was the health issue for January. She gave various ideals to help members prevent falls especially in their homes, such using handrails, having rugs with nonskid backing and exercising to improve balance.

The February meeting will be held at the home of Robyn Lance with the program, “Time for Tea.”
