Pat Washington, fourth-grade teacher from North Jefferson Elementary School, was the third teacher in RESA 8 to receive a “Let’s Move! WV” grant. The purpose of the grant is to provide an incentive for schools to implement the “Let’s Move!” WV program from Jan. − May, 2012.

Chosen schools must participate in 15 minutes of daily physical activity each day, in addition to physical education and recess. Washington, as the teacher leader and grant recipient will provide support and direction to the rest of the staff. The whole premise is that movement will improve student learning.

According to the latest educational research, movement is essential in the learning process. Every school in RESA 8 had the opportunity to apply for the grant. Schools had the option to request $500, an iPad 2, or a class set of pedometers.

Terri Miller, RESA 8 Regional School Wellness Specialist presented the grant to Washington.

The grant is made available through the West Virginia Office of Healthy Schools and the RESA 8 Coordinated School-Public Health Program.
