New members named to WVU Hospitals-East board

MARTINSBURG — The Board of Directors of West Virginia University Hospitals-East recently announced the appointment of John A. Draper, Jr, M.D., Jackee Long, and Suzanne Shipley, Ph.D., to the WVUH-East health

Draper, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, represents the City Hospital medical staff on the board as its newly elected president. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedics at Emory University Hospital in Georgia. A longtime member of the City Hospital medical staff, Draper has an orthopedic practice at 309 Medical Ct. in Martinsburg.

Long is the current president of the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association and is past coordinator of service personnel for Berkeley County Schools. In her current role, she represents over 9000 paraprofessionals, secretarial/clerical, school transportation, custodial/maintenance and food service employees in 55 West Virginia counties. Long is a member of the AFL-CIO, American Federation Education Innovation Zones and is a past member of the board of directors of the Berkeley

County Schools Federal Credit Union. She resides in Martinsburg and is an active member of the Second Southern Baptist Church.

Shipley, a Shepherdstown resident, is the 15th president of Shepherd University. With an academic career beginning at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, Shipley also worked in Arizona and Maryland before moving to West Virginia in 2007. She holds a Ph.D. in German from the University of Texas and an M.A. and B.A. in German from Texas Tech University. She is a Fulbright Scholar and an American Council on Education Fellow. Shipley chairs the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Council of Presidents, serves on the International Council of the American Council on Education, and was awarded the American Cancer Society’s 2011 Relay for Life College President’s Award for the South Atlantic Region.

The 15-member WVUH-East board includes representatives from Berkeley and Jefferson counties as well as individuals from WVU’s Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center in Morgantown.
