Martinsburg physician achieves board certification in Clinical Lipidology
Philip J. O’Donnell, MD, FACP, a cardiologist with University Cardiovascular Associates in Martinsburg, has recently been awarded Diplomate status with the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABLC).
The ABCL is a non-profit certifying organization dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality from cholesterol disorders and related disease by assessing qualifications and certifying knowledge of professionals in lipid management.
Professionals in the area of lipid management or “lipidologists” specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol disorders known as dyslipidemia, which may cause atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for approximately one-third of all deaths in the U.S.
O’Donnell is the only physician in the region to hold a board certification in Clinical Lipidology and one of 600 physicians nationwide to achieve this certification. As a lipidologist, O’Donnell has a special interest in preventative cardiology and is specially trained to manage cholesterol and find treatments to meet a patient’s unique needs.
To obtain Diplomate status with the ABCL, O’Donnell completed a range of continuing medical education requirements and successfully passed a rigorous examination. He has extensive training in cholesterol management, cardiovascular risk assessment and intervention.
