Henderson gets help, Musselman beats Patriots

INWOOD— The Musselman girls had ridden the aggressive all-round play of Nicole Henderson to two regular season wins over Washington. So when the two teams met in the first round of the Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 tournament on Monday, the Patriots showed Henderson and her teammates a box and one defense that assigned a chaser to Henderson and had the other four Washington players in a 2-2 zone defense.

Henderson was limited to just two field goals and nine points, but the Lady Applemen posted a 40-34 win anyhow as Brianna Caison scored 16 points and joined with Henderson to make a handful of critical free throws in the last minutes of the fourth quarter.

The tournament loss ends Washington’s season with a 4-17 overall record and an 0-3 mark against the Lady Applemen. Musselman improved to 13-10 overall and will play a second-round Sectional game tonight (Wednesday) at top-seeded Hedgesville.

It was better free throw shooting that greatly helped Musselman. The Lady Applemen were 16-for-24 (66.7 percent) while Washington was 7-for-17 (41.2 percent).

Alycia Lambert (11 points), Morgan Adams (eight points), and Kenya Dozier (six points) scored more than did the other Patriots.
