Members of Kearneysville Presbyterian Church continue to meet in the original building used after the congregation’s formation in 1869. The church is located at the corner of Rt. 480 and old Rt. 9 in Kearneysville.
The church was established to secure the preaching of the Gospel and Sabbath School instruction for the spiritual edification of themselves, their families and their neighbors.
Emphasizing the sovereignty of God, the authority of the Scriptures, and the necessity of grace through faith in Christ, the services are preached from the Bible and how the Scriptures relate to today. Services feature joyful singing and music.
Pastor Tom Forbes has served at Kearneysville Presbyterian for three years and leads a congregation of 18 people.
Forbes has a Bachelor of Science degree in communication arts from James Madison University. He has completed a two-year training program through Shenandoah Presbytery to become a Commissioned Lay Minister and served in the U.S. Army for five years at Fort Benning, Ga.
Services start every Sunday at 9 a.m. Every service is followed by a potluck lunch and fellowship.
Special services during the year include a 7 p.m. Christmas Eve service and a 9 a.m. Easter service.
Kearneysville Presbyterian is active in community support. The congregation supports Jefferson County Community Ministries and CCAP/Loaves and Fishes, which provides food, financial, medical and spiritual assistance along with budget counseling to those in need.
The congregation also supports the Gore Home for Children in Ethiopia through iCARE. The Gore Home has been in service as a children’s home since 1985. They provide nutrition, clothing, access to a local public school, a spiritual lifestyle and a small amount of health care. The home currently houses approximately 125 students.
