SHENANDOAH JUNCTION— A 15-4 third-quarter scoring spree helped Martinsburg wrap up its 72-51 girl’s basketball win over homestanding Jefferson last Thursday.
With a five-point halftime lead, Martinsburg had seen its once-prosperous 14-point lead in the second quarter melted back. But then its pressure defense quickly moved the lead. The Lady Bulldogs were winning for the 12th time in 19 games. Jefferson was left with a 3-19 overall record.
Martinsburg outscored the Lady Cougars, 36-20, in the tell-all second half.
Jasmyn Hosby scored 25 points for the Lady Bulldogs and McKinley Thomas had 30 points for Jefferson.
Nicole Henderson was the dominant force behind Muuselman’s easy 51-25 win over visiting Jefferson in a girl’s basketball game played on February 7. Henderson gunned in 24 points as she missed by only one point of equaling Jefferson’s team point total.
Musselman held a 26-14 lead at the half and then was able to outpoint the Lady Cougars, 25-11, in the runaway second half.
A fullcourt, zone press employed by Musselman unraveled the Lady Cougars in the second half. Jefferson committed nine turnovers in the third quarter alone.
It was the fourth time Musselman had beaten Jefferson, then 3-18 overall. Musselman was 10-9 overall.
