About the Spirit
The Spirit of Jefferson–Farmer’s Advocate was established in 1844 to provide quality news and information to the residents of then Jefferson County, Va. Today’s Spirit of Jefferson continues that tradition by bringing timely and thorough reporting to its readers on a weekly basis.
The Spirit was purchased in December 2009 by the See family from Romney, calling to a close the ownership of Edward “Pat” Dockeney who had headed up the paper since 1996.
A redesign of the paper has been underway since the beginning of 2010 in efforts to provide even more coverage of local news and events happening in and around Jefferson County. Expanded coverage of government actions, local businesses, schools and community news has become the norm at the weekly paper.
In addition to providing information about what others are doing in the county, the Spirit continues to be an active participant in the community as well. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, the newspaper also supports local youth, sports and other nonprofit agencies.
For the first time, the paper is working in conjunction with the Jefferson County Fair to provide a special tab section of the paper focusing on all aspects of the yearly event. The paper also provides an outlet for the featuring of businesses through advertising.
The newly established “Spotlight” allows a business not only to advertise their product or company, but to share their story as well.
The Spirit advanced to the internet, in November of 2010, providing online up to the minute breaking news coverage as well as continued coverage of all the county’s events and happenings.
The community is encouraged to send news items and comments to editor@spiritofjefferson.com or via mail to P.O. Box 966, Charles Town, WV 25414. Suggestions for how the paper can better serve its readers are always welcome.
What lies ahead for the Spirit?
The Spirit is moving ahead, but still keeping it’s community charm. We are growing in many ways with the hope to be the first place that readers and the community looks for news and events happening in Jefferson County. We have made a giant leap with our new web site.
In the future, we are hoping to be even more interactive with our readers on their mobile phones, on the go devices and other digital media.
The Spirit staff is growing, as is the beautiful county that we live and work in. There are so many things happening in our county and the Spirit tries to do our part to participate and cover as much as possible.
With the partnership with the Jefferson County Fair last year, has come a whole new world for us at the Spirit. We have teamed up with Ranson Parks and Recreation for the July 4th Fireworks this year. Thanks go out to both the Parks and Rec and the Jefferson County Fair Association for letting us be a part of your events.
We are also now partnering up with Prettyman Broadcasting. Wednesday mornings you can hear us on talk radio. We will also have sports scores from WEPM Sports Radio added to our Sports section of the web site weekly from our friends at WEPM. Thanks for the opportunity to partner with everyone at Prettyman.
There is much ahead for the Spirit, as we try to grow along with our constantly growing community.
Thank you to our readers for your patronage over the years. We all hope to have many more years as your local news source in Jefferson County.
